Synopsis

Delivering Social Value – Dylan Pugh & Joe Cudd

This presentation will draw on a recently undertaken Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) and social return on investment (SROI) study of Ysgol Pen Rhos exploring the issue of social value, particularly in relation to Primary Education.

The results of the study will be shared, identifying best practice for provision of primary education – including aspects of engagement, design, and operation of facilities. Furthermore, the study will be used to suggest best practice for industry-wide approaches to POE and SROI.

Connecting a Community; the social value impact of a new all-through school development – Ruth Hynes

As architects and designers, we’re constantly aware of the need to create places and spaces that are uplifting and inspire us – that are light and airy, encourage social interaction and enable people to fulfil their potential. We want the projects we work on to have a positive impact on people’s lives and we want to do this with an environmentally responsible and cost sensitive approach to place-making.

The focus on wellbeing offers a great opportunity to create buildings that make a real positive impact on people’s lives. That’s why Atkins has developed a Human-Centred Design solution. Our award winning, digital design tools support an innovative engagement process that enable clients and building users to articulate and prioritise the aspects of the built environment that are most important to them in terms of their health and wellbeing. These priorities are captured and inform the building brief, interpreting and testing different design solutions, to create a building that’s truly bespoke to its users’ needs.

Our Human-Centred Design solution considers a range of nine physical and perceptual wellbeing factors. Understanding the complexities and interconnected nature of these parameters at the very beginning of a building project is the only way to deliver environments that maintain, at their heart, the wellbeing of those that inhabit them.

In this presentation we will be talking about how this solution has been used in the development of the new Haverfordwest Secondary School, part of the Band B new schools programme in Wales. This presentation looks at how this suite of tools has been used and how It has been effective in engaging staff and students alike from the inception of the project in understanding what is important to them. The use of the digital platform has been invaluable during these Covid19 times to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged and have a voice.
